We are pleased to introduce the latest version of our SaaS Metrics Calculator. This newest iteration has been updated to provide a simpler user experience and more recent benchmark data (via OpenView). We’re happy to offer this free tool for startup founders looking to track their performance and get a handle on their operations.

Measuring Performance is Crucial

Measuring your startup’s performance is essential for managing your company effectively as well as securing your next funding round. It’s important to do so from the early days and to get into the habit of always being on top of your data.
We work with many early-stage companies and have found that founders often lack the tools needed to track their most important financial KPIs. This means they have difficulty tracking progress and seeing where to improve, and it can also create unnecessary difficulty in future due diligence processes.
TLV Partners’ SaaS Metrics Calculator is a standard and easy-to-use Excel file that makes it super simple to monitor your startup’s progress and compare it to industry benchmarks. All you need is the basic HR, sales, and marketing data that you (hopefully) have at hand. No extra tools are required, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Examples of questions you can answer with the calculator:

  • How does our startup’s growth rate compare to industry benchmarks?
  • How long does it take us to recover our cost-of-acquisition (CAC) for new customers?
  • What is our average customer lifetime value (LTV)?
  • How much monthly recurring revenue (MRR) can we expect based on our current contracts?
  • What is our cohorted churn rate over time?

 

How to Use the SaaS Metrics Calculator:

  1. Download the XLSX file

Once you’ve opened it (we recommend using Microsoft Excel), you can find detailed instructions in the first sheet, aptly named Instructions.

  1. Input your company’s data

Fill out the required fields in the sheet titled Your Data. You’ll need contract start dates, employee salaries, and some basic details about your sales and marketing cycle (how long it takes you to close a lead). You’ll also need to input your expenses.

  1. Your reports are ready!

You now have a ready-to-use dashboard showing your key metrics over time (Graphs) as well as a cohort analysis report (Cohorts) and benchmark data to compare yourself against (BM Graphs). You can also use the Audit sheet to quickly find gaps in your model and find areas of concern.

What’s New in This Version:

Over the years, our SaaS Metrics Calculator has been downloaded thousands of times, and we have received numerous feature requests. In this latest release, we have implemented several new features and user experience improvements:

  • Simplified revenue input: Instead of manually entering MRR for every customer, you can now enter each signed customer contract with its start date, end date, customer type (new, expansion, or renewal), and contract amount. The MRR waterfall is generated automatically.
  • Updated benchmark data: We have included the latest benchmark data provided by OpenView, up to 2023.
